Seeing Far in the Dark with Patterned Flash

چکیده
Flash illumination is widely used in imaging under low-light environments. However, intensity falls off with propagation distance quadratically, which poses significant challenges for flash at a long distance. We propose new technique, named “patterned flash”, Patterned concentrates optical power into dot array. Compared the conventional uniform where signal overwhelmed by noise everywhere, patterned provides stronger signals sparsely distributed points across field of view to ensure those stand out from sensor noise. This enables post-processing resolve important objects and details. Additionally, projects texture onto scene, can be treated as structured light system depth perception. Given novel system, we develop joint image reconstruction estimation algorithm convolutional neural network. build hardware prototype test proposed technique on various scenes. The experimental results demonstrate that our has significantly better performance distances Our code data are publicly available. Seeing lightness in the dark.
From intense sunlight in bright snow down to a moonless night in a dark forest, we can use light to recognize objects and guide our actions. This remarkable range mainly rests on having two different types of photoreceptors, the rods and the cones. The cones are active under daylight conditions, allowing high acuity and color vision. Rods are mainly active under very dim illumination conditions...

The intensity threshold of colour vision has been behaviourally tested in birds; the results show that parrots lose colour vision in brighter light than humans.

An IR image of the human face presents its unique heat-signature and can be used for recognition. The characteristics of IR images maintain advantages over visible light images, and can be used to improve algorithms of human face recognition in several aspects. IR images are obviously invariant under extreme lighting conditions (including complete darkness). The main findings of this research a...

E choes are a major part of our daily auditory lives. Yet, very few of us are even aware that we use them constantly to understand the space around us. The bats of the suborder Microchiroptera have made echo detection their primary sensory modality for guiding agile flight in cluttered, threedimensional (3-D) environments and for capturing flying insects in complete darkness. The attempt to und...

Weak lensing by large-scale structure is an invaluable cosmological tool given that most of the energy density of the concordance cosmology is invisible. Several large groundbased imaging surveys will attempt to measure this effect over the coming decade, but reliable control of the spurious lensing signal introduced by atmospheric turbulence and telescope optics remains a challenging problem. ...
